The 2007 Pre-Budget Report was a bit of a non-event from a company car perspective although private fuel benefit scale charges saw a huge hike to £16,900 from 6th April 2007. Employers and employees should review whether this benefit is really worthwhile.

A list of new cars with CO2 emissions of 120 g/km or less is now available on the site here. These vehicles are subject to reduced company car tax from April 2008 and other tax breaks are available such as reduced road tax.

HMRC have announced new reduced Advisory Fuel Rates for company car drivers. The new rates are shown here. Following a number of compliants, HMRC will allow employers to use the old rates until 28 February 2007.

HMRC are expected to announce the outcome of their review of Employee Car Ownership (ECO) Schemes in the forthcoming pre-Budget report. This review, which has been ongoing for some time, is expected to result in a tightening up on the operation of some employee car schemes which do not strictly fall within HMRC guidelines.

Also expected in the pre-Budget report is details of the review of capital allowances for business cars. In the future it  is possible that capital allowances could be based upon the CO2 emissions of a vehicle.
